There’s Something about That Name
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)
Not many of us, perhaps none of us, would admit to being name-droppers. You know, the person who sprinkles his or her conversation with names of well-to-do people they know. Or the individual who, in sharing an incident involving a friend, unnecessarily brings up that person’s social status or financial assets. Name-dropping can even extend to the clothing some folk wear. The designer gets top billing on their outfits.
Like you, I try to avoid name-dropping, but I recall one instance when I resorted to it. I was invited back to graduation at the university where I had served in the administration. My invitation came in the mail, and it had a sticker, indicating that I would sit in a special gueat section. When I arrived at the entrance with my younger son, I was told he couldn’t enter the auditorium because my invitation had only one sticker on it; he would have to sit in the balcony. I wasn’t at all pleased with that, and I talked with the usher for a while but got nowhere. I finally said, “Please call Mrs. B.” The young woman did, and soon Mrs. B came, greeted me warmly by my name, and told me to follow her, with my son, of course. I walked confidently to our seats. The eyes of the young usher trailed after us.
It’s good to know the right person at the right time, and this is most essential when it comes to knowing Jesus, not merely knowing about Him, but being intimately connected with Him so that He knows us and can readily recognize us when we call on His name. Every day we’re faced with situations that compel us to call on the name of Jesus to find a hiding place. It happens when we feel pressured in our workplace, when we’re anxious about a health diagonsis, when we are misunderstood, or when we’re at our wit’s end about a difficult decision we must make. At such times we can run to the strong tower of Jesus’ name and find relief.
There are times when life becomes so challenging that all we can say is, “Jesus, help me,” and right away we find the strength we need for that moment. His is the name worth dropping any time, and we can do so with the assurance that help is only a prayer-breath away. Let us, then, not hesitate to call on the name of Jesus in our time of need, for there really is something about that name.
Always,
Judith

Hello Nan,
His name is wonderful! When we don’t have time for a long prayer, just calling upon His name in faith helps.
It’s so good to hear from you, my dear. Continue to be blessed. JN
