Love’s Wonderful Old Song
“The Lord has appeared of old to me saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” Jeremiah 31:3 (NKJV)
In our skeptical age, even love has been weighed in the balance by some people and has been found wanting. They don’t put much stock in love. Many think that love can’t last for a long time, at least, it definitely isn’t everlasting. But at the same time that there is this distrust of lasting love, many are seeking love in all manner of ways and in all kinds of places. When they are disappointed in one place, they turn to another, ever seeking and never finding.
But there is love, lasting love—everlasting love—that is being offered by the God of love. It’s such a pity that His love is being spurned by so many. Surprisingly, it’s not because they don’t believe God’s love exists; they just can’t fathom the reality that God loves them. Being loved by God is a notion they find hard to accept, but it wasn’t at all a far-fetched idea to Anna Bartlett Warner, the author of the well-known song “Jesus Loves Me This I Know.” In the mid 1800s, Anna and her sister Susan were a literary duo. Anna wrote poetry, and Susan wrote stories. Susan used Anna’s poem in a poignant episode in one of her popular novels, and the poem caught the public’s imagination and has been an all–time favorite ever since.
Jesus loves me, this I know
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak, but He is strong.
The simplicity of this children’s song captures an important scriptural truth. The Bible is the source of our knowledge of the love of Jesus. It’s a love that comes freely from the Saviour’s heart. It’s unfortunate that so many people can’t see the love because they insist on doing something to earn it, and if they haven’t done their part, then they don’t feel entitled to enjoy the gift. But this cheerful song preaches the message that is at the heart of the gospel. Jesus really loves us, He gave His life to prove it. And it is a gift.
We are free to revel in this love so eloquently stated in a simple children’s song that gives us joy, comfort, and peace. We’re never too old to find joy in experiencing this love. If you own a Bble, you have free access to the treasure of a love letter from God. In it are the soul-satisfying words that tell you that you are loved with an everlasting love. Yes, Jesus loves you.
Always,
Judith

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this special love song, and its history.
A few months ago I shared the history of this song in an original children’s story at my church family.
Jesus Loves Me. ❤️ The Bible tells me so. When L C and I visited my parents (who are now sleeping in Jesus), before leaving he’d always hold her hands, look deeply into her eyes, and sing this song. A sweet memory I will always cherish as he too is now sleeping in Jesus.
Thank you. ❤️
